Iyom The Female Warrior At 54
By Okey Maduforo.
She stepped into the Anambra political stage learning the ropes in a terrain full of high flyers, and most political watchers felt, as it were, that coming from the banking sector, she may not stand the heat in the “kitchen.”
On her first journey to the Green Chambers in 2007, she indeed made a statement that sent signals to pundits that she had come to stay.
Many who may have run away with the erroneous impression that she was a pushover came to terms with the stark realities that their permutations were dead on arrival.
After eight years at the Green Chambers, she had built for herself one of the most formidable and well-oiled political structures ever in the history of Anambra politics.
Still not done yet, the Lily of the National Assembly, Sen. Uche Liliana Ekwunife, made a foray into the Red Chambers, which is the Nigerian Senate. Though her first term was short-lived, no thanks to the litany of litigations that trailed her victory as at then.
Her second attempt at the Senate saw Ekwunife triumph in the contest for Anambra Central District, which had the likes of former Governor Chris Ngige as incumbent and Sir Victor Umeh, among others.
Despite the fact that she is no longer at the Red Chambers, Ekwunife has remained a constant name in the politics of Anambra State and, of course, the country at large.
Today, Ekwunife is saddled with the task of harmonizing the policies, programs, and economic ideology of the five states in the South-East as the Director-General of the South-East Governors’ Forum.
Apparently, her position has continued to be a reference point in the politics and governance of the South-East, as both the forum and the apex Igbo organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, describe her as the point of convergence of Igbo wishes and aspirations.
Ekwunife has no political barrier, as she sees politics as a game primarily to better the interest of the people, hence putting collective interest high and above self-ambitions.
As Sen. Liliana Uche Ekwunife clocks fifty-four, it is indeed garlands for the Amazon of South-East Politics and Governance.
