Irate youths from Ogboj community in Orumba South Local Government Area on Friday held peaceful demonstration over the imposition of a caretaker committee on the town by Anambra government official.
The youths carrying placards with various inscriptions and palm fronds marched from Igba Ogboji (ancestral square) to the palace of HRH Igwe Festus Iyioku, the traditional ruler of Ogboji singing war songs.
Chief Okeke Chukwuwuike, President of Ogboji Youth Association who spoke at the palace told the traditional that the youths were angry over sudden change in the leadership of the community.
“Every notable Ogboji indigene who attended the last convention held in December agreed that the current caretaker committee’s tenure will end May 3, 2021.
“This committee led by Mr Marcelnus Emechebe had resorted peace in Ogboji and are doing a number of developmental projects and suddenly they were removed by government officials without recourse to the town”, he queried?
Chukwuwuike told the traditional ruler that their motive was to ascertain if he was aware of the change in the leadership.
He said that the youths have resolved that the people named in the new committee will not function in that capacity, adding that anyone that resist their position will be ex-communicated.
Igwe Festus Iyioku, commended the youths for the peaceful conduct, saying” I was not consulted before the change in the caretaker committee too”.
“I am happy that as the youths, you learnt of something of the bad development in Ogboji and you came out to ask questions.
“I must tell you that I will swiftly make findings from the office of Local Government and Town Union Affairs in Awka and other stakeholders of the community with a view to resolving the problem”, he assured.
Iyioku warned them against allowing the move to be hijacked by hoodlums, noting that the community had in the past recorded serious crisis that slowed her development down.
Mr Paulinus Nwafor, Maxwell Ojiakor, both named as members of the new caretaker committee members denounced their membership before the youths.
Christian Nwankwo, another member of the 13-man committee, said he only received a call inviting him to the office of the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Town Union Affairs in Awka and he attended.
