Six years after Awa Community in Orumba North local government area of Anambra lost it's traditional ruler the community have been engulfed in fresh crisis following an alleged bribe of N50 million given to top government functionaries to allegedly impose a traditional ruler on the town.
At the government house Awka yesterday a crowd of over three hundred protesters stormed the area chatting war songs and warning that there would be a break down of law and order this coming Saturday if an election of a traditional ruler is conducted in the town.
According to the spokesman of the town and former President General of the community Engr Paul Okafor , Ambruse Egwuonwu and also in a six paged Petition signed by the twelve villages that make up the town, they alleged that,
"It is important to note that since the death of our former traditional ruler in 2015 , our community have been battling to crown a successor and last Christmas when we met we did not discuss about election of a new Traditional Ruler.
"Suddenly we were told last week of an election this Saturday and we are shocked about that and we have it on good authority that some top government functionaries were bribed by some cabal to the tune of over N50 million for them to impose one Isreal Ezuo as the new Igwe.
"We were reliably informed that the member representing Orumba North state constituency, Special Adviser to the governor on special Duties and others were involved in the plot to impose a traditional ruler on us .
When contacted the Special Adviser to the governor on Special Duties Mrs Ify Obinabo denied the allegations contending that she is not from Awa Community but Ufuma.
"I am not from Awa Community, I am from Ufuma Community and in Igbo land a woman has no input to make on matters that has to do with traditional rulers of a Community.
"This is a matter that falls within the office of the Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy matters and the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy matters not the office of the Special Adviser on Special Duties.
Efforts to speak with the lawmaker representing Orumba North Constituency Chief Emeka Afoka proved abortive as he was away on an official assignment.
